January 5 - 7, Fort Pierce, Florida
Owner John Jetson and Capt. Mike Everly led the crew of the Huzzy to first place overall at the 2007 Fort Pierce Billfish Derby. They beat out 16 boats that managed to post 69 sailfish releases. With 9 releases on time to its credit, the Huzzy won a total of $37,750.
Capt. Glenn Cameron and the Floridian team won second place overall with 9 releases and also took home a daily on day 2 winning a total of $35,650.
The Alican, with Capt. Dougie Heaton II, beat out the Dixie Devil with 7 releases on time in a close battle for third place. The crew of the Alican won 2 dailies on the first and third day of fishing and took home the top money prize of $41,100.
Throughout the event, most boats fished north of Fort Pierce. Even though fishing got off to a slow start, the tournament winners were down to the wire in fierce competition, a double or a triple could have changed the whole game.
In 2004, the FA LA ME released 33 to win the event. In 2006, The Floridian released 36 to claim the new record and win the event.
